CAAC Releases Green Aviation Implementation Plan
The Civil Aviation Administration of China has released a new plan to promote greener civil aviation during the 15th Five-Year Plan period. By 2030, the plan aims to reduce aviation carbon intensity, expand sustainable aviation fuel use, increase renewable energy deployment at airports and improve operational efficiency across the sector.
Boeing Forecasts China Fleet Will More Than Double By 2045
Boeing expects China’s commercial aircraft fleet to grow to more than 9,800 aircraft by 2045, with Chinese airlines requiring over 9,200 new aircraft during the period. Most demand is expected to come from single-aisle aircraft, supported by passenger growth, fleet renewal, and continued investment in aviation infrastructure.
China’s Three Largest Airline Groups Face Financial Pressure
Air China, China Eastern Airlines and China Southern Airlines reported weaker financial performance during the third quarter of 2026 and losses across the first nine months of the year. Higher fuel prices, softer domestic yields, competition from high-speed rail, and weather-related disruption continued to squeeze airline margins
Acumen’s Take
On China’s Green Aviation Plan
CAAC’s implementation plan gives the industry a clearer framework for reducing carbon intensity across airlines and airports. The focus on sustainable aviation fuel, renewable energy, and operational efficiency could shape future fleet planning, infrastructure investment, and environmental reporting.
On China’s Long-Term Fleet Demand
Boeing’s forecast highlights the scale of China’s long-term aircraft requirements across both fleet growth and replacement. Continued demand for new-generation narrowbody and widebody aircraft could create significant opportunities across leasing, financing, maintenance and supporting aviation services.
On Airline Financial Performance
The weaker financial performance across China’s largest airline groups highlights the challenge of turning traffic recovery into sustainable profitability. Fuel costs, pricing pressure and domestic competition will remain important factors as carriers manage capacity and network growth.
