Sumitomo, SMBC Aviation Capital, Apollo, and Brookfield to Acquire Air Lease Corporation
Sumitomo Corporation, SMBC Aviation Capital, Apollo-managed funds, and Brookfield have jointly announced a definitive agreement to acquire Air Lease Corporation in a 100% cash transaction. Air Lease, founded by Steven F. Udvar-Házy and John L. Plueger, has a globally recognised portfolio focused on new-technology aircraft.
Upon completion, the company will be renamed Sumisho Air Lease. The deal includes the transfer of Air Lease’s aircraft orderbook, while SMBC Aviation Capital will act as servicer for the majority of Sumisho Air Lease’s portfolio. The transaction, which is subject to shareholder and regulatory approvals, is expected to close in H1 2026.
Peter Barrett, CEO of SMBC Aviation Capital, stated:
“This transaction is transformational for our business and the leasing landscape. With economies of scale being critical in our industry, acquiring Sumisho Air Lease’s orderbook and servicing rights enables us to deploy capital at scale and reshape the sector. Air Lease’s modern portfolio and reputation make this a compelling strategic fit.”
