Airbus Delivers First Pratt & Whitney-Powered A321XLR to Wizz Air
Wizz Air has received its first Airbus A321XLR, becoming the world’s first operator of the type powered by Pratt & Whitney GTF engines and the first European low-cost carrier to add the A321XLR to its fleet. The aircraft offers a range of up to 4,700 nautical miles and delivers 30% better fuel efficiency per seat, reduced NOx emissions, and lower noise levels. Wizz Air, an all-Airbus operator, now has over 230 A320 Family aircraft in service and 295 on order.
Aviation Capital Group Delivers A321neo to Wizz Air
Aviation Capital Group (ACG) announced the delivery of one A321neo to Wizz Air, the second aircraft in a multi-aircraft sale-leaseback transaction. This aircraft is powered by Pratt & Whitney’s GTF engines, aligning with Wizz Air’s fleet-wide commitment to next-generation propulsion systems and improved fuel efficiency.
BBAM Acquires Six Pratt & Whitney GTF Engines
BBAM Limited Partnership has acquired six new Pratt & Whitney GTF engines for its Incline Aviation III fund. This marks BBAM’s first direct transaction with Pratt & Whitney and adds to its growing portfolio of over 45 engines valued at approximately $550 million.
BBAM CEO Steve Zissis said, “This transaction marks an exciting milestone as we complete our first direct deal with Pratt & Whitney. We see strong demand from our airline customers and look forward to building a long and successful relationship.”
StandardAero Expands LEAP-1A and LEAP-1B Services
StandardAero has expanded its support offerings for CFM International’s LEAP-1A and LEAP-1B engines to now include lease engines. Through partnerships with leading engine leasing companies, the initiative strengthens StandardAero’s Total Engine Asset Management (TEAM™) platform, allowing operators of the A320neo and 737 MAX to maintain fleet availability during MRO shop visits.
SVP Will Pitcher noted, “By facilitating access to lease engines, we help customers minimise downtime and reduce the cost impact of maintenance events.”
Acumen’s Take
On Wizz Air’s A321XLR Entry
This delivery positions Wizz Air at the forefront of narrowbody long-haul operations, leveraging the A321XLR’s extended range and efficiency to unlock new route opportunities. The Pratt & Whitney-powered configuration also signals broader industry acceptance of GTF engines as the propulsion standard for ultra-efficient single-aisle operations.
On BBAM’s Direct GTF Engine Purchase
BBAM’s direct engagement with an OEM for GTF engines highlights the growing appeal of engine investment as a standalone asset class. As airlines prioritise fleet modernisation, lessors and funds are diversifying into next-gen engine portfolios to tap into high-demand maintenance and leasing cycles.
On StandardAero’s Lease Engine Offering
StandardAero’s strategic expansion reflects a deeper vertical integration of aftermarket services. By securing lease engine access, the MRO provider is positioning itself as a comprehensive lifecycle partner, offering not just overhaul capabilities but also continuity of operations during downtimes.
