Aer Lingus Maximises A321neo Long-Haul Fleet Utilisation
Aer Lingus is maximising utilisation of its Airbus A321neo long-haul fleet this summer by deploying its 184-seat, two-class Airbus A321LR and Airbus A321XLR aircraft on selected European services from Dublin between North American rotations. The strategy supports aircraft productivity while adding capacity on intra-European routes, replacing Airbus A320ceo and A320neo aircraft on selected services. Scheduled A321LR/XLR services include Amsterdam, Brussels, London Heathrow, Munich and Paris Charles de Gaulle, alongside flights to Bordeaux and Oslo.
Airline Flight Academy Celebrates Major Milestone
Dublin-based Airline Flight Academy has announced a major milestone in its partnership with Ryanair, having trained more than 1,000 Ryanair Future Flyer Academy cadets in just five years. AFA Commercial Manager Kilian Hanratty said the achievement was made possible by expert instructors, strong training standards and close partnerships. He added that AFA remains central to Ryanair’s expansion as pilot demand continues to grow, supported by the airline’s fleet of more than 600 aircraft in service and 300 more on the way.
FLY4 Airlines Launches Operations From Belfast International
FLY4 Airlines has expanded its operational footprint with the launch of its first services from Belfast International Airport, marking its first base on the island of Ireland. Boeing 737-8K5 EI-FFC, c/n 37251, positioned from Istanbul to Belfast International on 4 May using callsign FFA886P. The inaugural flights departed Belfast International on 8 May, operating on behalf of TUI to Reus as TOM1508/9 and Corfu as TOM1526/7.

HAECO Group has agreed to form a joint venture with Sun Group, Toyota Tsusho and Japan Airlines to establish a new aircraft maintenance facility at Van Don International Airport in Vietnam. The US$360 million project forms part of HAECO’s long-term growth strategy in Asia. The facility will expand local maintenance capacity in Vietnam by bringing international standards, proven systems and operational best practice to support domestic and global airline customers.
Airbus and Boeing Narrowbodies Extend Seasonal Flying Opportunities
Next-generation narrowbody aircraft are reshaping the economics of seasonal flying by allowing airlines to operate routes beyond traditional peak summer periods. Speaking at the Routes Europe conference in Rimini, Aegean Airlines’ network planning and airline partnerships director Ioannis Rasoglou said the improved efficiency and range of aircraft such as the Airbus A320neo Family and Boeing 737 MAX have enabled airlines to sustain thinner markets for longer periods, and in some cases year-round.

The programme is expected to deliver annualised cost savings of up to USD 50 million compared with the 2025 baseline, in line with the upper end of the previously communicated range. Significant reductions are expected to be realised in 2026, with the programme described as critical to positioning the company for future profitable operations.
Norwegian to Acquire Nordic Leisure Travel Group
Norwegian has entered into an agreement to acquire Nordic Leisure Travel Group, a leading hotel and leisure travel experiences company in the Nordics. The transaction brings together brands including Ving, Spies, Tjäreborg, Globetrotter and Sunclass Airlines with Norwegian and Widerøe. The combined company will bring together NLTG’s packaged travel and hotel expertise with Norwegian and Widerøe’s existing network, which carries 27 million passengers, creating a stronger Nordic provider of leisure and business travel.
Europe Not Expected to Run Out of Jet Fuel
European airports are not expected to run out of jet fuel this summer, despite concerns linked to the Strait of Hormuz and Europe’s reliance on Gulf oil. Airline executives cited in the report said they are generally not concerned about fuel availability, although cost remains the key uncertainty. Wizz Air Chief Commercial Officer Ian Malin said the airline has secured fuel for May and June and expects suppliers to secure stock for July.
Qatar Airways Expands Summer Network to Over 160 Destinations
Qatar Airways is expanding its summer network to more than 160 global destinations, with 26 destinations being added from today. The airline said the expansion includes the return of services to key gateways in Asia and Europe, alongside new routes in the Americas, as it continues to restore connectivity to major global markets. Qatar Airways also highlighted its transfer experience through Hamad International Airport and inflight connectivity supported by Starlink.
Safran, MTU and Avio Aero Welcome EU Support for SHARP Project
Safran Helicopter Engines, MTU Aero Engines and Avio Aero have welcomed European Commission support for SHARP, a major research project focused on future military helicopter propulsion. SHARP, short for Sovereign High-performance Architecture for Rotorcraft Propulsion, aims to develop scalable technology building blocks for a new military helicopter engine. The project will receive around €25 million, or US$29 million, from the European Defence Fund.

The airport crossed the one million passenger mark over the May Bank Holiday weekend and has welcomed 1,276,987 passengers since 1 January. Passenger numbers are down 1 percent on the previous year, reflecting a changing mix in 2026 with more KLM and Air France passengers and fewer Ryanair passengers, while May traffic was up 35 percent compared with pre-COVID levels.

Irish Aircraft Leasing Industry Remains Resilient Despite Fuel Turbulence
Deloitte’s latest aircraft leasing survey highlights continued resilience in Ireland’s aircraft leasing industry despite fuel price pressures and geopolitical uncertainty. The survey found that 91 percent of aviation finance leaders in Ireland view geopolitical uncertainty as a moderate or major challenge, while all respondents expressed concern that airline defaults or restructuring could increase in the next 12 to 24 months. Ireland remains central to the sector, with 19 of the world’s top 20 aircraft lessors operating from the country and Irish-based firms managing approximately 60 percent of the global leased fleet.
Ireland’s EU Presidency to Focus on Aviation Competitiveness and Climate Policy
Ireland will take over the Presidency of the Council of the European Union from 1 July to 31 December 2026. Ireland Trips to USA Down in May
Ireland visitor numbers to the United States reached 34,898 in May, down 12.1 percent compared with May 2025 and down 21.3 percent on pre-pandemic levels. The rolling annual total stood at 477,991, down 1.1 percent on the 12 months to May 2025. The decline follows drops in January and February, an increase in March and a further decline in April.
Waterford Airport Set to Reopen Within 12 Months
Waterford Airport’s extended runway is expected to open in summer 2027, with efforts continuing to attract Ryanair services back to the airport.
