Aer Lingus Maximises A321neo Long-Haul Fleet Utilisation
Aer Lingus is maximising utilisation of its Airbus A321neo long-haul fleet this summer by deploying its 184-seat, two-class Airbus A321LR and Airbus A321XLR aircraft on selected European services from Dublin between North American rotations. The strategy supports aircraft productivity while adding capacity on intra-European routes, replacing Airbus A320ceo and A320neo aircraft on selected services. Scheduled A321LR/XLR services include Amsterdam, Brussels, London Heathrow, Munich and Paris Charles de Gaulle, alongside flights to Bordeaux and Oslo.
Airline Flight Academy Celebrates Major Milestone
Dublin-based Airline Flight Academy has announced a major milestone in its partnership with Ryanair, having trained more than 1,000 Ryanair Future Flyer Academy cadets in just five years. AFA Commercial Manager Kilian Hanratty said the achievement was made possible by expert instructors, strong training standards and close partnerships. He added that AFA remains central to Ryanair’s expansion as pilot demand continues to grow, supported by the airline’s fleet of more than 600 aircraft in service and 300 more on the way.
FLY4 Airlines Launches Operations From Belfast International
FLY4 Airlines has expanded its operational footprint with the launch of its first services from Belfast International Airport, marking its first base on the island of Ireland. Boeing 737-8K5 EI-FFC, c/n 37251, positioned from Istanbul to Belfast International on 4 May using callsign FFA886P. The inaugural flights departed Belfast International on 8 May, operating on behalf of TUI to Reus as TOM1508/9 and Corfu as TOM1526/7.

IAG, Virgin Atlantic and IATA Back Alternative Heathrow Expansion Plan
IAG, Virgin Atlantic and IATA have backed an alternative plan for Heathrow’s third runway after the Arora Group submitted a new phased proposal for the airport’s expansion. The proposal, outlined by Surinder Arora, includes a new western terminal and a phased third runway. It follows the group’s previous loss to London Heathrow Airport’s rival expansion plan last November.
Iberia Launches Direct Madrid-Monterrey Service
Iberia has inaugurated a new nonstop route between Madrid and Monterrey, strengthening its Mexico network and expanding connectivity between Latin America and Europe. The service will operate three times per week, on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, using an Airbus A330-200 configured with Business and Economy cabins and capacity for 288 passengers. The route will offer approximately 53,000 seats during 2026.
IATA Warns of Severe Cost Inflation in Europe
IATA has warned of severe cost inflation affecting European airlines. Speaking at the IATA Annual General Meeting in Rio de Janeiro, Rafael Schwarzman, IATA Regional Vice President for Europe, said jet fuel had risen past 40 percent of total airline operating expenses. The cost escalation, combined with marginal 0.8 percent regional air traffic growth in April and an annual €8 billion structural burden from the EU261 passenger rights framework, has compressed airline unit margins across the continent.
IndiGo Plans Damp-Lease Reduction
IndiGo plans to return most of its damp-leased fleet and reduce the use of older-generation aircraft. The airline is taking a more measured approach to capacity growth as high fuel prices and airspace disruptions affect operations. The review also includes evaluating the future of older Airbus A320 aircraft in its fleet.
South Africa Tourism Minister Expresses Frustration Over African Open Skies Progress
South Africa’s tourism minister Patricia de Lille has expressed frustration over the slow progress of the African Open Skies programme. Speaking at Africa’s Travel Indaba 2026 in Durban, she said the initiative was not moving forward despite being linked to an African Union resolution and the African Continental Free Trade Agreement. She said South Africa could no longer wait for progress on air access.
JAL and ANA Release Second Joint Report on Sustainable Aviation Fuel
Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways have released the second edition of their joint report, “Toward Net Zero CO2 Emissions from Air Transport in 2050.” The report outlines the current state of sustainable aviation fuel in Japan and the actions needed to support aviation decarbonisation. The airlines called for a society-wide effort to achieve net-zero carbon dioxide emissions in air transportation by 2050.
Jazeera Airways Appoints Andrew Littledale as Chief Financial Officer
Jazeera Airways has appointed Andrew Littledale as Chief Financial Officer, effective 1 July 2026. CEO Barathan Pasupathi said Littledale’s aviation finance experience and track record in financial strategy, transformation and capital management will support the airline’s growth ambitions. The appointment is intended to strengthen Jazeera Airways’ financial strategy as it pursues future expansion.
Jeju Air Scales Back Boeing Order to Strengthen Finances
Jeju Air has reduced its firm order for Boeing 737-8 aircraft from 40 to 32 units, reflecting a shift from aggressive growth towards financial discipline and risk management. The airline cited Boeing delivery delays as the main reason for the reduction and has extended its fleet renewal timeline from late 2027 to late 2028. Boeing continues to face production constraints following increased regulatory scrutiny after the Alaska Airlines 737 MAX incident.
Jet2.com Adds 37 Routes in Major Summer Expansion
Jet2.com is expanding its 2026 summer operation with 37 new routes, taking its total summer network to 532 services. The expansion includes three new destinations, La Palma, Palermo and Samos, bringing the number of overseas destinations served this summer to 66. The airline is also planning to enter the Egyptian market from 11 February 2027, with services to Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh, taking its overall destination portfolio to 68.

IATA Calls EU261 Revisions a Missed Opportunity
IATA has expressed frustration over the latest EU261 revisions, with Director General Willie Walsh describing the outcome as an “opportunity lost.” The association said the regulatory burden now reaches €8 billion annually, while meaningful reform on delay thresholds was removed from the negotiations. The revisions add a list of extraordinary circumstances and require airports to develop contingency plans for mass disruptions, while IATA also highlighted that air traffic management causes more than 90 percent of delays.

K2 Aviation Closes Two Boeing 737-800BCF Transactions With Aircastle
K2 Aviation has closed the purchase of two Boeing 737-800 Boeing Converted Freighters from Aircastle. The aircraft are on lease to ASL Airlines and operate in Belgium and France. K2 Aviation Managing Partner Karl Ryan said the transaction marks the company’s first aircraft purchase from Aircastle and expands its portfolio into the freighter aircraft segment.
Northern Ireland Airports Report Positive First Quarter
The UK Civil Aviation Authority has published first quarter 2026 statistics for Northern Ireland’s three airports: Belfast International, Belfast City and City of Derry. Passenger throughput across the three airports was up 2.7 percent year-on-year, following 3.4 percent growth in the same period in 2025. Belfast City and City of Derry recorded a recovery in business, with around 35,000 more passengers handled across the two smaller terminals.
Ryanair Files NW26 Network Additions
Ryanair has filed a series of NW26 network additions, with services scheduled to begin between 25 October and 12 December 2026. The additions include Birmingham-Copenhagen, multiple Catania routes to Alicante, Memmingen, Porto and Valencia, Gdansk services to Budapest, Catania and Madrid, and Glasgow Prestwick-Turin. Further additions include Liverpool-Copenhagen, Milan Malpensa services to Agadir, Crotone and Gdansk, Naples-Warsaw, Sofia-Palermo, Venice Marco Polo-Krakow, Venice Marco Polo-London Luton and Wroclaw-Madrid.
SETU Hosts International Drone and UAV Conference
South East Technological University hosted an international conference on opportunities for drone and UAV industries in modern Europe. The event was held in collaboration with the University of Radom in Poland and the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Ireland. Willie Walsh Calls for Urgent Removal of Dublin Airport Passenger Cap
IATA Director General Willie Walsh has called for the Dublin Airport passenger cap to be removed quickly. Speaking at the IATA Congress in Rio de Janeiro, Walsh said airlines need certainty to plan winter schedules and commit aircraft. He warned that uncertainty around aircraft movements affects airport operations and that new routes connecting Ireland to global markets could be at risk without fast legislative action.
