China Eastern Launches Direct Dublin–Shanghai Route

China Eastern Airlines has launched a new three-times-weekly non-stop service between Dublin and Shanghai, giving Ireland its first direct connection to the Chinese city. The route is operated with Airbus A350-900 aircraft, with inaugural flight MU231 arriving in Dublin shortly after 07:30 before outbound service MU232 departed for Shanghai at around 11:30. 

 

Ryanair Focuses on CEE Expansion for Winter 2026/27

Ryanair is increasing its focus on Central and Eastern Europe for Winter 2026/27, with additional capacity planned across Slovakia and Poland. The shift follows the airline’s decision to close its seven-aircraft base in Berlin and three-aircraft base in Thessaloniki, while expanding fleet deployment and network activity across key CEE markets. 

 

TUI Announces New Cork–Palma Route for Summer 2027

TUI will launch a new weekly service between Cork Airport and Palma for Summer 2027, operating every Tuesday from 18 May to 31 August. The route will use 189-seat Boeing 737-800 and Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft and will support TUI’s Marella Cruises offering for Irish holidaymakers. The service will provide travellers from the South of Ireland with direct access to Palma, a key Mediterranean homeport for Marella Cruises.

Pirata Air Airbus A330-243 HL8768, c/n 1268, was delivered to Seoul on 23 July 2026. The aircraft was previously registered as OE-LWT.

Eirtech Aviation Airbus A320-271N N957NK, c/n 10899, was ferried from Goodyear to Shannon via Bangor between 15 and 16 July 2026.

Egypt Launches New Digital Visa-on-Arrival System

Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities has announced a new Digital Visa-on-Arrival System to modernise entry procedures and improve the experience for international travellers. The pilot phase will begin on 1 August 2026 across all arrival terminals at Cairo International Airport. The system is expected to be extended to other airports nationwide under a phased rollout.

 

Lufthansa Plans European Capacity Cuts and Network Restructuring

Lufthansa is preparing to reduce short-haul capacity across its European network through 2028, including the removal of up to 15 aircraft from its short- and medium-haul fleet in 2027. Thousands of flights are expected to be cut, with the airline also planning to reduce duplicate connections operating at similar times. Munich is set to play a greater role in the network due to lower operating costs per passenger compared with Frankfurt.

 

Rolls-Royce to Power Philippine Airlines’ Additional A350-1000 Fleet

Rolls-Royce has signed a memorandum of understanding with Philippine Airlines to supply 18 Trent XWB-97 engines for nine additional Airbus A350-1000 aircraft. The agreement also includes engine provisions for up to five further aircraft covered by purchase rights, alongside a proposal for Rolls-Royce’s TotalCare maintenance programme. The deal builds on PAL’s 2023 A350-1000 order and supports the airline’s long-haul fleet expansion.

 

Rostec Plans Aviation Holding Company to Consolidate Airline Assets

Rostec is considering the creation of a new aviation holding company that would bring together Red Wings, SkyGates, the National Air Ambulance Service and Aviacapital-Service. The proposed structure is intended to centralise the management of aviation transport, leasing and maintenance assets, while supporting aircraft and helicopter maintenance, aftermarket services and workforce training. Rostec said the plan remains under discussion, with the final structure and management team yet to be approved.

 

Saudi Air Connectivity Program and beOnd Explore Red Sea Routes

Saudi Arabia’s Air Connectivity Program has signed a memorandum of understanding with beOnd Airlines to explore nonstop services between the Red Sea destination and several European cities. The proposed partnership is intended to strengthen international access to the tourism development while supporting the Kingdom’s wider aviation and visitor growth objectives. The initiative forms part of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 strategy to expand global connectivity and position the country as a leading travel destination.

 

SCAT Airlines to Launch Cargo Operations with Boeing 767-300BCF

SCAT Airlines will enter dedicated cargo operations through the conversion of a Boeing 767-300ER into a Boeing 767-300BCF. The aircraft will be the first of its type to operate in Kazakhstan and will support freight and express cargo services between Asia, the Middle East and Europe. With capacity for up to 57 tonnes of payload, the freighter will also support Kazakhstan’s ambition to develop as a regional air cargo hub.

 

Shohin Airlines Orders Four Airbus A320neo Family Aircraft

Shohin Airlines has disclosed an order for four Airbus A320neo Family aircraft, comprising two A320neos and two A321neos. The aircraft will form the foundation of the Tajik carrier’s fleet as it prepares to launch operations from Dushanbe and expand across regional and international markets. The A320neos will seat 176 passengers, while the A321neos will accommodate 196 passengers in a two-class layout.

 

Somon Air Selects Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 XE Engines for Boeing 787 Fleet

Somon Air has signed a memorandum of understanding with Rolls-Royce for four Trent 1000 XE engines to power two new Boeing 787 Dreamliners. The agreement marks the Tajik carrier’s first partnership with Rolls-Royce and includes the manufacturer’s TotalCare maintenance programme. The package will provide long-term engine support, health monitoring and improved cost predictability for the airline’s future widebody fleet.

 

Tigerair Taiwan Selects Pratt & Whitney GTF Engines for 15 Additional A321neo Aircraft

Tigerair Taiwan has signed a memorandum of understanding with Pratt & Whitney for GTF engines to power 15 Airbus A321neo aircraft, including four firm orders and 11 leased aircraft. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2028, with the agreement also covering a 12-year EngineWise Comprehensive maintenance programme. The additional aircraft will support the airline’s regional expansion while improving fuel efficiency, operating economics and noise performance.

 

TransNusa to Add Four Aircraft and Expand International Network in 2026

TransNusa plans to add four aircraft by the end of 2026, expanding its fleet from the current 19 aircraft as it strengthens international operations. The additional capacity will support new Jakarta–Bangkok and Denpasar–Phuket services, while the airline also seeks more slots at Singapore Changi Airport. TransNusa said its strategy will prioritise higher frequencies on established routes amid fare competition, fuel price volatility and wider economic uncertainty.

British Airways CEO Calls for Lower UK Aviation Taxes

British Airways CEO Sean Doyle has urged Prime Minister Andy Burnham to reduce aviation taxes, arguing that air passenger duty and airport charges are higher than in many other markets. He also warned that the airline industry’s net-zero ambitions could be at risk without stronger investment in sustainable aviation fuel production, with the UK mandate rising from 3.6 per cent in 2026 to 22 per cent by 2040. British Airways is part of IAG, which also owns Aer Lingus.

 

Clare TD Says New Routes Are Likely Following Ryanair’s €50 Million Shannon Investment

A Clare TD says Ryanair’s planned €50 million investment at Shannon Airport is likely to support new routes in the future. The project includes a four-bay maintenance, repair and overhaul hangar and a new Ryanair Engineering Academy, creating 80 apprenticeship roles and supporting the training of more than 400 aircraft mechanics between 2027 and 2031. Ryanair’s existing three-bay maintenance facility at Shannon currently supports more than 200 jobs.

 

Park2Travel Launches Real-Time Smart Tracking Transit Technology

Park2Travel, operated by APCOA, has invested more than €2 million in a real-time passenger information system and five new premium buses for its Dublin Airport parking service. The upgrade introduces smart tracking technology and double-door Volvo buses to reduce boarding times and improve transfers for more than 25,000 passengers each week. The new system is also intended to maintain the service’s 12-minute frequency during peak travel periods.

 

AerCap and Philippine Carriers Support Badjao Community

AerCap has partnered with Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific to support approximately 2,500 Badjao families affected by a major fire near Davao City. The outreach initiative was organised in support of the Irish-registered Embrace Badjao Foundation, which assists the marginalised community through education and wider family support. The foundation’s local school also serves as a community hub for children and their families.

 

Ireland–Portugal Travel Reaches Record May Level

Portugal welcomed 75,312 visitors from Ireland in May 2026, up 8.2 per cent year on year and 45.4 per cent above pre-pandemic levels. The rolling annual total reached 578,756, an increase of 3.7 per cent compared with the 12 months to May 2025. Accommodation establishments recorded 3.3 million guests and eight million overnight stays during May, while cumulative guest numbers reached 12 million between January and May. Tourism revenue for the period stood at €10,325.04 million, with exports increasing by 5.2 per cent in May.

Tourism Ireland partnered with Visit Cork and Cork Airport in Germany to promote Cork as a must-visit destination. The initiative highlighted Lufthansa’s direct Frankfurt–Cork service and the ease of access it provides to key German travel professionals and journalists. 

 

Ryanair Announces Major Shannon Engineering Expansion

Ryanair has submitted a planning application for a €50 million expansion of its engineering operations at Shannon Airport. The proposed development includes a new four-bay maintenance, repair and overhaul hangar and an Engineering Academy, which together are expected to support more than 400 highly skilled jobs. The investment would make Shannon Ryanair’s largest aircraft maintenance facility in Ireland. 

 

Ryanair’s Lauda to Extend A320 Leases as New Aircraft Costs Rise

Ryanair Group airline Lauda plans to extend leases on its existing Airbus A320 aircraft after determining that A320neo pricing is too high under current market conditions. The Malta-registered carrier operates 26 A320s, each configured with 180 seats, and is one of five air operator certificates within the Ryanair Group.

SMBC Aviation Capital Orders 100 Airbus A320neo Family Aircraft

SMBC Aviation Capital has placed a firm order for 100 Airbus A320neo Family aircraft, comprising 65 A321neos and 35 A320neos. The agreement will provide the Dublin-based lessor with a pipeline of next-generation narrowbody aircraft through the mid-2030s, supporting airline fleet renewal and growth. Together with parent company Sumitomo Corporation, SMBC Aviation Capital has now accumulated more than 900 direct Airbus aircraft commitments.
