China Eastern Launches Direct Dublin–Shanghai Route

China Eastern Airlines has launched a new three-times-weekly non-stop service between Dublin and Shanghai, giving Ireland its first direct connection to the Chinese city. The route is operated with Airbus A350-900 aircraft, with inaugural flight MU231 arriving in Dublin shortly after 07:30 before outbound service MU232 departed for Shanghai at around 11:30. 

 

Ryanair Focuses on CEE Expansion for Winter 2026/27

Ryanair is increasing its focus on Central and Eastern Europe for Winter 2026/27, with additional capacity planned across Slovakia and Poland. The shift follows the airline’s decision to close its seven-aircraft base in Berlin and three-aircraft base in Thessaloniki, while expanding fleet deployment and network activity across key CEE markets. 

 

TUI Announces New Cork–Palma Route for Summer 2027

TUI will launch a new weekly service between Cork Airport and Palma for Summer 2027, operating every Tuesday from 18 May to 31 August. The route will use 189-seat Boeing 737-800 and Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft and will support TUI’s Marella Cruises offering for Irish holidaymakers. The service will provide travellers from the South of Ireland with direct access to Palma, a key Mediterranean homeport for Marella Cruises.

Abra Group Expands CFM LEAP Engine Partnership

Abra Group has expanded its partnership with CFM International with an order for 100 LEAP-1A engines to power 50 Airbus A320neo family aircraft allocated to Avianca. The agreement also includes spare engines and a long-term services package covering both Avianca and GOL. The support arrangement extends to GOL’s Boeing 737 MAX fleet, strengthening engine maintenance and support across the group.

 

Airbus A220 Marks a Decade of Global Growth

The Airbus A220 family has grown significantly since its first flight in 2016, with more than 500 aircraft now in service, over 1,000 on order and more than 240 million passengers carried. The aircraft regularly serves over 500 airports worldwide and has evolved from the Bombardier CSeries into a major player in the global short-haul market.

 

British Airways Moves to Amadeus Altéa NDC

British Airways is moving to Amadeus Altéa NDC on the IATA 21.3 standard as the next stage of its NDC strategy. The transition forms part of the airline’s £7 billion business transformation programme, which includes upgrades across aircraft, cabins, customer service and technology. The move is also intended to strengthen BA’s current NDC capabilities while preparing the airline for a future full Offer-and-Order model. 

 

Altura Airlines Launches Operations Across Regional Australia

Altura Airlines has commenced operations as a majority Indigenous-owned charter carrier serving the mining, resources, government and regional sectors across Australia. Based in Perth, the airline is operating Dash 8-100 and Dash 8-400 aircraft for passenger and freight charter services to remote and regional communities. Altura plans to introduce Airbus A320 aircraft from 2027, subject to regulatory approvals, to support higher-capacity workforce and transport infrastructure.

 

Alaska Airlines to Double Dedicated Freighter Fleet

Alaska Airlines will add four leased Boeing 737-800 Boeing Converted Freighters, increasing its dedicated cargo fleet from five to nine aircraft. The additional freighters are expected to enter service in the first half of 2027 and will support operations in Alaska and Hawaii. Aircraft based in Hawaii are planned to operate under the Hawaiian Air Cargo brand as the two airlines continue integrating their cargo businesses.  

 

Air India and Saudia Expand Strategic Partnership

Air India and Saudia have signed a memorandum of understanding to deepen their strategic partnership and strengthen connectivity between India and Saudi Arabia. Building on their existing codeshare agreement, the airlines will explore wider codeshare cooperation, improved network connectivity, terminal co-location where feasible, and closer collaboration across sales, operations and loyalty programmes. The agreement also includes plans to assess future cooperation involving flyadeal and Air India Express.

 

Air Nostrum Owners End Partnership with Fortress

The owners of Air Nostrum have agreed with U.S. investment firm Fortress to end their partnership following the collapse of the Strategic Alliance of Regional Airlines (SARA). Air Investment Valencia, controlled by Air Nostrum shareholders, has acquired Fortress’ remaining 20 per cent stake in SARA, giving the Spanish owners full control of the holding company. The move follows the exit of Irish carrier CityJet after its restructuring under Ireland’s examinership process. 

 

Aviation Capital Group to Lease Six Boeing 737-10s to Aerolíneas Argentinas

Aviation Capital Group has signed lease agreements with Aerolíneas Argentinas for six Boeing 737-10 aircraft, with the first delivery scheduled for 2028. The aircraft will support the airline’s 2027–2031 fleet renewal plan and add capacity on high-demand domestic and regional routes from Buenos Aires. The agreement also expands the long-standing partnership between ACG and Aerolíneas Argentinas.

 

Boeing Commercial Aeroplanes CEO Highlights Renewed Confidence and Progress

Boeing Commercial Airplanes is showing a renewed sense of confidence after years of programme delays, leadership changes and concerns around production quality and reliability. Stephanie Pope has led BCA since March 2024, while Kelly Ortberg was appointed Boeing Company president a few months later. Their leadership has coincided with efforts to stabilise the commercial aircraft business and rebuild confidence in Boeing’s operations. 

 

Binter Orders Five Additional Embraer E195-E2 Aircraft

Binter has ordered five additional Embraer E195-E2 aircraft, with purchase rights for four more, further expanding its regional fleet. The E195-E2 already plays a key role across Binter’s network, supporting services between the Canary Islands, mainland Spain and other regional destinations. The airline said the aircraft’s operating efficiency, range and passenger comfort make it well suited to its route structure.

 

Emirates Retrofit Programme Reaches 100-Aircraft Milestone

Emirates has completed refurbishment work on 100 aircraft under its retrofit programme, including 47 Airbus A380s and 53 Boeing 777s. The programme began in November 2022 and is being carried out at Emirates Engineering facilities in Dubai. Around 20 more aircraft are expected to be upgraded by the end of December 2026, taking the airline further through its US$5 billion investment programme.

AerCap Orders 15 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners

AerCap has placed a direct order for 15 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, taking its 787 fleet to approximately 140 aircraft. The aircraft are scheduled for delivery through 2033 and will be powered by GE Aerospace GEnx-1B engines. The agreement also gives AerCap substitution rights to switch to the larger Boeing 787-10 variant.

Airlines for America has welcomed the Irish government’s move to address the long-standing passenger cap at Dublin Airport. A4A said greater capacity will allow airlines to respond to growing demand while offering passengers more choice and improved connectivity. The organisation also said the change will help Dublin strengthen its position among Europe’s leading international hub airports. 

 

BA CEO Sean Doyle Sees Potential for Further European Airline Consolidation

British Airways CEO Sean Doyle has said financial pressure on weaker airlines could lead to further consolidation in Europe. He noted a growing divide between airlines in stronger financial positions and those that are more vulnerable. Doyle added that geopolitical pressures and high fuel prices could increase financial stress and accelerate consolidation across the sector. 

 

BBAM Orders 30 CFM LEAP Spare Engines

BBAM has signed an agreement to acquire 30 CFM International LEAP-1A and LEAP-1B spare engines. The order will expand BBAM’s engine portfolio and support operators of Airbus A320neo family and Boeing 737 MAX aircraft.

Cork Airport Welcomes 342,387 Passengers in June

Cork Airport welcomed 342,387 passengers in June, putting monthly traffic 22 percent above June 2019 levels. Passenger numbers for the first half of 2026 reached 1,619,373, just one percent below the same period in 2025, which was the airport’s busiest year. Year-to-date traffic remains 34 percent above pre-COVID levels.

 

DAA Responds to Proposed Dublin Airport Charges

daa has expressed disappointment with the IAA’s Draft Determination on Dublin Airport price caps. The airport operator said it will review the proposals in full and respond to the IAA before the consultation deadline on 18 September. daa said its priority is to protect service quality while continuing to fund future airport capacity. 

 

FunFly Aerosports Flying Club Celebrates 10,000 Flying Hours

FunFly Aerosports Flying Club has reached the milestone of 10,000 flying hours, reflecting its growth as a flight training organisation in Ireland. Established at Limetree Airfield in 2020, the club later moved to Clonbullogue Airfield before relocating to its purpose-built base at Benfield Airfield in May 2025. The new facility provides additional capacity to support recreational and professional flight training as the club continues to expand.

 

SMBC Aviation Capital Sees Airlines Planning Fleets Further Out

SMBC Aviation Capital says airlines are planning fleet requirements further into the future and showing greater preference for larger aircraft. The lessor signed deals for 100 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft and 100 Airbus A320 family aircraft at the Farnborough Airshow, including A320neos, A321neos, MAX-8s and MAX-10s. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in the early 2030s.  

 

Ryanair Q1 Profit Falls 34 Per cent as Fuel Costs Rise

Ryanair reported Q1 profit after tax of €538 million, down from €820 million a year earlier. Earnings were affected by a sharp rise in the cost of the 20 percent of jet fuel that remained unhedged, while fares were six percent lower. The airline linked the weaker fare environment mainly to regional uncertainty in the Middle East and the timing of the Easter holiday period. 

 

SMBC Aviation Capital Completes US$2 Billion Bond Offering

SMBC Aviation Capital has completed a 2 billion US dollar senior unsecured bond offering, its largest since launching its bond programme in 2016. The offering was split across three-, five- and 10-year notes, with interest rates of 4.95 per cent, 5.20 per cent and 5.70 per cent, giving an average rate of 5.27 per cent. Investor demand was strong, reaching more than 13 billion US dollars and making the offering more than six times the amount offered. The three sets of notes were priced at 70, 85 and 112 basis points above U.S. Treasury rates, respectively.
