FAA Says Software Issue Will Not Stop Boeing 737-10 Certification
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will not require Boeing to update the 737 MAX flight management system (FMS) software as a prerequisite for certifying the 737-10, despite an issue with the software that is still being addressed. A panel of internal FAA safety experts reached the decision on 2 October 2026. The decision eases concerns that the 737-10 and the recently certified 737-7 would face a mandatory software update before entering service. The panel determined that the issue, which can affect automated guidance during missed approaches, is apparent to pilots and can be managed by flight crews.

The checks follow an industrial quality issue that temporarily disrupted A330neo deliveries during the summer, bringing attention to production quality controls and inspections of aircraft already delivered. Airbus said the issue was isolated and that its root cause had been identified.

Acumen’s Take
The latest developments point to an aviation market where growth and fleet modernisation continue alongside rising operational complexity. Strong passenger demand and capacity expansion remain evident, but airlines are also navigating restructuring, air traffic control disruption, weather events and cost pressures. Maintenance capability, certification progress and production quality remain central to fleet availability and long-term planning. At the same time, infrastructure investment, connectivity growth and increasing environmental scrutiny are shaping how operators balance expansion with resilience and efficiency.
